11 Essentials to Bring with You on a Trip to Los Angeles

Trip

You stare at the empty suitcase, flopped open on your bed. You’re wearing a sweater over your long-sleeves, it’s cold.

What about LA?

Do you need to pack long sleeves?

How about shoes, do you even bring extra shoes?

Nobody Walks in LA… is that true?

Los Angeles is classified as having a Mediterranean climate – its ranges fluctuate from mild to hot depending on the season.

This is good news; you don’t have to worry about bogging down your suitcase with heavy coats, boots and other winter survival gear.

However, there are some essentials you do need to bring. Things that will keep you comfortable.

Items you already own.

1. Sunscreen

Ah, the California sun! Perhaps that’s why you decided to go to LA in the first place.

No matter when you’re visiting LA, sunscreen is a must. Even on the rare occasion that the skies are overcast, you still need sunscreen.

It’s something you’ll need to apply, multiple times per day.

2. Hat with brim

Bring your baseball hats, cowboy hats, sombreros. The sun is powerful, and you’ll be thankful for the extra protection.

3. Sunglasses

You know, so you can actually see the sights you’re there to see.

4. A light rain coat

If you’re traveling during December to March, bring a light rain jacket. You don’t want a little precipitation to interfere with your good time.

5. Comfy walking shoes

People DO walk in LA!

If Disneyland is on your list, you’ll want comfy footwear as you traverse the park.

Choose walking shoes that allow your feet to breathe.

If you’re outdoorsy, LA does not disappoint. There are multiple hikes across all sorts of terrain. You’ll be kicking yourself with whatever inappropriate shoe you brought – a high heel perhaps – if you don’t bring a good pair of walking shoes.

6. Reusable Water Bottle

A change in routine brought on by travel usually equals dehydration. Drinking fluids regularly – especially if you’re visiting in the summer – is vital.

Make sure you have a reusable water bottle with you that you fill continuously throughout the day. You’ll be happy to have it, and less likely to get a dehydration related headache. Never a fun way to spend part of a vacation.

7. Bathing Suit

Because there are beaches and swimming opportunities everywhere!

8. Day Pack Backpack

You need something to carry your sunscreen, water bottle, and swimsuit in, so don’t forget a small backpack. They’re great for stowing snacks, or any souvenirs you pick up, too.

9. External charger & cable

This is something many people forget.

They spend their day outside, having fun.

They’re using their phone’s battery while taking pictures, posting on social media, sneaking in a quick facetime session with a family member who’s stuck in the office thousands of miles away… before you know it, it’s time to get an Uber, or find your way back to the hotel. You pull your phone out of your purse, and it’s dead.

An external charger and cable are great to have with you. You never know when you’ll need them. But if and when you do, you can be sure you’ll be flooded with relief that you have one on hand.

10. Flip Flops or Sandals

These are great for the beach, a trip to your hotel swimming pool, or a quick walk. They actually make sandals that are intended for hikes too, so bring those if you’ve got them.

11. Your Wits

As in any city, it’s important to keep your wits about you. Most people are wonderful and kind, happy to help. However, there are a select few who are out to take advantage.

Be mindful of where you are, and what could happen.

For instance, do you know what happens if your Uber or Lyft driver gets into an accident and you sustain an injury?

Also, if you’re out hiking, be aware that there are rattlesnakes around. They’re afraid of you – they’ll probably be gone long before you see them.

But again, just keep your wits about you, be proactive, and do your best to arm yourself with knowledge beforehand, so as not to get into a situation that you may later regret.

Conclusion:

Los Angeles is a fun fast-paced city that offers something for everyone.

Come prepared and you’ll have a great time – no matter what your idea of a great time is.
